Editorial Note
In April, the heart beats faster

In ancient times, humanity believed that within the body there was an organ with its own will. The restless, sometimes inconstant muscle that never takes a break, beats on average 120 times a minute in the chest of a, and about 72 in the chest of an adult. At the end of one day it has pulsed more than 100 thousand times. It inspires musicians and poets, moves people or breaks them in sadness. Vital for life, the Heart also goes to the doctor. It is to Cardiology that we look, in this issue no. 78 of the Newsletter, to […]

The CDI Library reopens its doors to the community

Today, we associate the following motto with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon: “A School that honours the past and builds the future”. For more than a century, FMUL has been the only institution of higher education in medicine in Lisbon and the one that has produced the most doctors by far. And the role of the CDI Library has obviously been integral to this reality. The history of the CDI Library begins, like that of the Faculty itself, long before its transfer from the Campo dos Mártires da Pátria (which currently houses the Faculty of Medical […]

World Parkinson’s Disease Day

On the 11th of this month the World Parkinson’s Disease Day was celebrated, and Joaquim Ferreira, professor at FMUL, marked this day with an opinion article published in Raio X. It is estimated that, in Portugal, this disease afflicts more than 18,000 people. This number may increase further. There are treatments that improve the quality of life of these patients but unfortunately these are not easily accessible in all regions of the country. “By being unaware of the characteristics of this disease, we may be adopting behaviours that do not help the people afflicted. This happens when we do not […]

“Do telemóvel para o mundo” is the new book by Professor Daniel Sampaio

Daniel Sampaio, the tenured Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, now retired, released his new book titled “Do telemóvel para o mundo” on April 12th. Professor João Martins e Silva, former Director of FMUL, released his book On blood circulation and cardiovascular notes: comments on an 18th century book. News Report / Profile
The sense of being – Professor Fausto Pinto

He appeared in a gown, hiding within it a suit without a blazer, which shows that he cares about his image, and his golden skin showed that his Easter Holidays were not spent in Portugal. On his wrist was an Apple watch, always connected to his inseparable iPhone. He is confident, and it shows in his voice and the way he greets others when he looks into their eyes. I had only met him once before at a work meeting, and so I reached out and introduced myself again: “I’m Joana, and we have an interview”. He interrupted me […]

Another Solidarity Day, by the Faculty of Helping

Solidarity was the key word on April 6th. It was 10 o’clock sharp when the bus from the parish council of Benfica arrived, with the 23 Sages, all of them from the Day Centre of the Residents’ Association of Furnas, Benfica. Waiting for them were 37 participants to ensure that nothing was missing for this year’s honourees. This would be a day dedicated especially to them. Accompanying them was Teresa de Carvalho, Chairwoman of the Assembly of the Association of residents of the Furnas District in Sete Rios, but whoever sees her in action realises that she is a family […]

Professor Susana Constantino – A researcher who wants to know if low and moderate doses of ionising radiation can promote cardiotoxicity

She says she is not inspired to speak as she usually does, because of the tiredness she feels and that is visible in her eyes. Words are hard to get out of her in the first few seconds of conversation, gaining the rhythmic beat that I already knew in her, where ideas thrive with an immense desire to create passion in others when it comes to Science. Susana Constantino, Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and Researcher at the Cardiovascular Centre of the University of Lisbon (CCUL), is a natural born communicator and […]

Inês Zimbarra Cabrita – Research at the service of Cardiology

The CETERA space is special. Hidden in a corridor in the enormous building occupied by Santa Maria Hospital, it has a discreet and subtle appearance of rigour and good taste. A place nearly entirely white, with soft strokes of harmony that invite you to work. And this appearance is understandable as it mirrors the role of its Coordinator, Inês Zimbarra Cabrita. She is discreet and reserved, and she knows this is often confused with antipathy. Careful and demanding, she has realised that some criticism is inherent to being successful, but despite not engaging in conflict lightly, she shows when something […]

Luís Afonso Brás Simões do Rosário – The cardiologist who does not rest his heart

His name is Luís Rosário, and he is a Cardiologist at the Coronary Intensive Care Unit, one of the pioneer units worldwide, which belongs to the Santa Maria Hospital. In this unit, they treat critically ill patients with cardiovascular problems who are hospitalised, requiring intensive care, continuous monitoring and 24-hour treatment. These treatments can involve the administration of antibiotics, some intravenous, and control arrhythmias, cardiac insufficiencies, or the application of devices that temporarily support organs that fail. In a joint, collaborative work with other areas of Cardiology, the UTIC often needs to resort to Surgery or Arithmology. ICU patients are […]

When cancer damages the heart – A conversation with Cardiologist Manuela Fiuza

Manuela Fiúza is the coordinator of the External Consultation of Cardiology at the Santa Maria Hospital (CHLN-HSM) and Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. We found ourselves on the first floor, in Heart Techniques, the most obvious place for those who deal with the largest muscle in the body. Truly friendly, she welcomed me exactly at the time that we agreed, a sign of someone who is rigorous, and likes others to also follow the rules. We sat down in a room amongst stretchers and gadgets only temporarily offline. She never hesitates […]

Ana Almeida – The first Cardiologist to perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the heart

We had a few conversations scheduled, but due to setbacks that were always out of our control, there was only time for a quick talk at the Cardiology Technique Unit of which she is the coordinator. Ana G. Almeida is an Associate Professor with Cardiology Aggregation and the head of Cardiovascular Imaging at the Santa Maria Hospital/CHLN. Her main focus is heart diseases and heart valve diseases, and it is through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMR) that she observes the mechanisms and functions of the heart. One of the physicians most trusted by Fausto Pinto, Director of the Department of Heart […]

See you later Natércia!

Her name is Natércia Costa. She is 67 years old, 32 of which were spent working “in this house”. The first ten were in the Neurosurgery Centre at the Júlio de Matos Hospital and the remaining 22 were spent within these four walls. She started her career as a telephone operator until she started to work on the Board of Directors, where she “learned a great deal”. She worked with Professor Fernando de Pádua, “he always carried a tape recorder which he would later give me for transcribing, at the time I still used a typewriter”. She also worked with […]

Isabel Aguiar – A woman amongst men

The Newsletter team has created a new section on the “side of here”, in an attempt to talk about the people who work behind the scenes, who give soul to the Faculty, who make routines run normally, without any recognition. Everything that happens is planned and prepared and takes time, involves commitment and almost always discretion. During the month in which we talk about Solidarity and the initiatives that the Faculty of Aid continues to develop, we decided to talk to one of its drivers. Despite being on the way out of the solidarity project, those who remain know that […]
