It is with great pleasure that we congratulate the Research Team of the Project “Myocardial Fibrosis Biomarkers in the early identification of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy” for the funding obtained in the 2013 call for SR&TD Exploratory Projects of FCT. Pessoa Prize awarded to Maria Manuel Mota

Researcher Maria Manuel Mota was awarded the Pessoa Prize 2013 (27th edition). A scientist at the Institute of Molecular Medicine and a renowned expert in the study of malaria, she now has her work honoured with one of the most prestigious prizes awarded in our country. The Pessoa Prize is a joint initiative of Expresso newspaper and bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos. It totals 60 thousand euros and aims to honour individuals in the fields of culture, the arts or science for prominent work done in Portugal in a given year. Professor Jacinto Monteiro appointed Chairman of the Shoulder and Elbow Committee worldwide

Professor Jacinto Manuel de Melo Oliveira Monteiro (Director of the Orthopaedics University Clinic of F.M.U.L | Director of the Department of Orthopaedics of C.H.L.N.) was appointed Chairman of the Shoulder and Elbow Committee worldwide by decision of the BoD of SICOT (Société Internacional de Chirugie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie). SICOT (World Orthopaedic Organization) is the oldest orthopaedic scientific society worldwide, celebrating 85 years of existence this year. This distinction is a motive for pride and a proof of the recognition enjoyed by Portuguese orthopaedics and the Lisbon Academic Medical Centre.

The 2nd Edition of the Research Day for Medical Students was held on 11 December and was organized by the GAPIC Team of FMUL and by the Students’ Association. The Retirement Ceremony of Professor Mário Andrea, Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon and Director of the Otorhinolaryngology University Clinic of FMUL took place on 8 November. Celebration of World Prematurity Day | 17 November 2013

  On 17 November the Neonatology Service – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – celebrated World Prematurity Day. It was a very lively morning that began with the opening of the exhibition “I was a preterm baby…” which featured 20 pieces of work done by parents and former preterms. It also included the participation of a few parents who wrote stories about their preterm infants which are part of a dossier available to parents whose babies have been admitted to the unit. 1st Anniversary of Biobank | 13 December 2013

The IMM-Biobank is a structure created by the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) that receives and stores a collection of biological samples donated on a volunteer basis in order to encourage biomedical research. Currently, the IMM-Biobank stores thousands of samples, namely blood, serum, saliva, urine, bone, DNA, tumour tissue and corresponding clinical information, and is a unique platform that provides technical support to research about the origin of diseases with major impact on the health of citizens, such as cancer or osteoporosis. The Faculty to Help wishes to thank all those who participated in the Food Collection Campaign of the Food Bank on 30 November and 1 December 2013. In this campaign we succeeded to collect 3.535 Kg of food. This result adds to the approximately 695 tons collected in the area of intervention of the Food Bank Against Hunger. Bolsas de Investigação em Oncologia NRS/LPCC – “TERRY FOX” (2014/2015)  O Núcleo Regional do Sul da Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro e a Fundação Terry Fox, com o objetivo de promover a investigação oncológica, irá lançar mais um programa com a duração de 2 anos, destinado a financiar projetos até ao montante de 15.000€.
