Editorial Note
Between worlds

The 76th edition of news@FMUL, which visits the world of Neurosciences, brings us several interviews with some of the most noteworthy names in scientific research in Portugal. They are professors, researchers from our institution, and so we went to chat with them. Hearing our scientists and professors gives us the chance to get to learn more about the universe of scientific research in this country and the way it is interconnected with certain sectors of society. To learn more about what is being done, how it’s being done, and, in the opinion of these players, what can be improved. The […]

Professor Fernando Nobre strengthens ties with the FMUL

January 27, 2018 marked the special moment when Fernando Nobre was appointed as Visiting Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. The moment was registered by the Director of the Faculty, Professor Fausto Pinto, who showed a deep pride in this new alliance. Professor Fernando Nobre had already been collaborating with the FMUL, in the optional subject Community Medicine, however, he is now the Head of the Optional Subject “Humanitarian Medicine”, of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Years of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Medicine.

Professor Rui Tato Marinho re-elected as member of the General Assembly of United European Gastroenterology

Recently re-elected as member of the General Assembly of United European Gastroenterology (UEG), Professor Rui Tato Marinho was the first Portuguese physician to hold this position. A re-election considered, in his own words, as a “victory” in a European “power play”. Confident of the growing relevance of the Portuguese specialists in the European context, he says that Portugal is the “country that sends most papers percapita to UEG Week and two years ago was the second country with most submissions, following Japan”. Professor Rui Tato Marinho is an Aggregate Associate Professor at the Gastroenterology University Clinic and member of the […]

Launch of SynergGIES by the GIE – FMUL with an eye on Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Office (GIE) of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon launched SynerGIEs at the end of January – a news cycle on the new accomplishments in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship, at the national and international level, in the health sector and in other sectors relevant and interesting for the FMUL. The GIE aims at engaging the entire community of the FMUL in these areas and, therefore, it believes that having access to these contents is extremely important for motivation and engagement. Innovation, that is, the creation of valuable insights for people is essential […]

António Guterres, Honorary Doctorate from the University of Lisbon

On 19 February, António Guterres, UN Secretary-General and former Prime Minister of Portugal, was distinguished with an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Lisbon. The proposal for this distinction was presented by IST – Instituto Superior Técnico, the institution where António Guterres studied and worked as a professor. In his acceptance speech, he left a series of strong messages, especially for the academic and scientific communities. “Learning to learn” was the message that he wanted to pass on to the students, because “what is going to happen in the coming decades is unpredictable” and “the contents they will study will […]

Maria do Carmo Fonseca – The Woman Behind the Wheel

The books on the History of Portugal taught us about the bravery of the Portuguese people, who decided to sail across the sea and open our little world to the whole world. Six centuries later, the Portuguese decided once again to show their will to conquer what no one else had even imagined. The new discoveries are now related to Science. And the explorers live among us and may be featured in the next text books. Her name is Maria do Carmo and she was the face of Science on a campaign from the Tourism of Portugal, in 2007, that […]

Professor Ana Sebastião – Guided tour of her brain researches

Ancient writings from 5000 b.C. tell us that when someone died the heart was carefully preserved, as it was considered to be the organ responsible for the mind, thoughts and emotions, while the brain was something of little interest and disposable. History shows that it was only after Hippocrates, who is regarded as the “father of Medicine”, that the brain was assigned the responsibility of transporting the mind. Since then, the brain became the object of deep reflections and studies that kept moving forward and kept up with the pace of societies and their physicians and researchers. Until this day, […]

The doubt that opens up new horizons for Psychiatry – from the perspective of Bernardo Costa Neves

“The art of healing the soul” is the word that comes from the Greek and defines Psychiatry. The brain is the organ that carries the “soul,” which is the same as saying the mind, that which many still attempt to maintain can be external to the body, by leaving it and continuing to have a life of its own. However, consciousness and what we call intuition, creativity or an impulsive idea, are all the result of a large chemical equation which is also part of the matter found in our heads. But is Psychiatry seen by all its specialists in […]

What if time stood still? – An investigation of Carmo Fonseca and Bruno de Jesus

On January 9th, Nature Communications magazine published the result of research conducted at the Laboratory run by Prof. Carmo Fonseca. While forming an unbeatable duo with researcher Bruno de Jesus, the country jumps in the hope of being able to cause time to stand still so we could stop ageing. It could be merely a question of aesthetics, but it’s not. Illnesses such as Alzheimer’s may one day be stopped. While the press pounded the news, hearing those involved was a must. Carmo Fonseca: First off, let me just say that the role of our University cannot be limited to […]

Social Cognition and the Laboratory run by Diana Prata

The way we behave and the way we feel things, the ties we build with others, or the coldness with which we move about in society, are all features of a single species: the human species. This is the very species that is able to stand for the best causes and create the most magnificent works of art, while being capable of decimating parts of its own existence.
