         On December 8, Santa Maria Hospital celebrated its 63rd anniversary. Launch of the Handbook on AIDS

The 5th edition of the Handbook on AIDS was launched on 25 January 2018, during the 11th Updating Workshop on Infectious Diseases, at Curry Cabral Hospital. The authors of the work are Professors Francisco Antunes and Fernando Maltez, of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. Heart and Vessels Department of the Lisboa Norte Hospital Center announces extension works

Sweets, salty snacks, cured meat products and soft drinks have been banned from cafeterias and bars at public hospitals and healthcare centers. The order was published in the Official Gazette on December 28 last year, signed by the Assistant Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Health, Fernando Araújo, and determines that all these types of products must stop being sold at these locations by 30 June 2018. Diogo Maia e Silva – GAPIC David Ferreira Award

It was his Master’s degree thesis on intratumour heterogeneity that earned 24-year-old Diogo Maia e Silva the 2017 GAPIC David Ferreira Award. The Amélia de Mello Foundation has created an annual grant to reward young physicians who develop clinical research projects, as part of the Research and Development Units of the Portuguese Faculties of Medicine. Bial Prize for Clinical Medicine 2018

The BIAL Foundation promotes the BIAL Prize for Clinical Medicine 2018, worth 100 000€, plus the possibility of publishing the work in an exclusive first edition. There are also two honorable mentions of 10 000€ each. Multiple Myeloma – 2018 Research Grant

The Grant is awarded to a 1-year research project, to be developed in a Portuguese institution, in the amount of 15,000 Euros.Projects endorsed by national researchers or by foreign researchers working in Portuguese institutions, with vocational training and/or higher education degrees are eligible to apply for this Grant. Scientific and/or epidemiological research on Multiple Myeloma are the areas eligible for funding. Projects with an interdisciplinary nature and the collaboration and partnership between various institutions will be valued. Francisco Belo receives sports scholarship

Francisco Belo, a student of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, is part of a list of 9 Portuguese student athletes who won scholarships with the unit value of 1000 euros. The 6th-year student won a gold medal in Athletics, in the discus throw competition at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei, and is now receiving a scholarship with an amount equivalent to the tuition fees paid in Public Higher Education Establishments. 2018 Clinical Pharmacology Meetings

Between 5 and 7 February, at the Egas Moniz Building of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, a series of meetings will be held with the main objective of disseminating the progress, knowledge and research in the areas of Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology. This event is aimed at the entire scientific community, students included, and will feature 3 plenary lectures by international speakers (Simon Maxwell, University of Edinburgh, and Detlev Boison, Legacy Research Institute, USA). Obituary
Professor João Manuel Ruas Ribeiro da Silva (1929-2018)

Professor João Ribeiro da Silva, Retired Full Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, passed away on 10 January. A leading figure of Portuguese Ophthalmology, he succeeded Professor Augusto Lopes as Full Professor of Ophthalmology. He was president of the Association of Medical Sciences and founded the Portuguese Academy of Medicine. After retiring, he dedicated himself, among other areas, to Bioethics. He published an extensive body of work. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Professor João Ribeiro da Silva.
