The new Management Board of the Northern Lisbon Hospital Centre was appointed following a proposal made by the Ministers of State and of Finance and Health. Portuguese Collaborating Centre of the Iberoamerican Cochrane Network

The Portuguese Collaborating Centre of the Iberoamerican Cochrane Network (CCPRCI), which has been created recently at our School under the Centre for the Study of Evidence-Based Medicine (CEMBE) will start its training activities this year with the offer of a course on how to conduct systematic literature reviews. The CCPRCI Coordinator, Professor João Costa, is responsible for the pedagogical content and the course is open to all members of FMUL. Erasmus program opened internships in 33 countries

Applications are open. A group of Portuguese universities and polytechnics launched an Erasmus program to allow 220 Portuguese students internships in 33 European countries and the selection process is still ongoing. The “Erasmus Al Sud, Connecting Regions, Creating Worlds” initiative is coordinated by the University of Lisbon and is offering internships for half a year in companies, hospitals and institutions of higher education in Europe. Santa Casa e Universidade de Lisboa editam obra completa do Padre António Vieira

“First three volumes of the complete works of Jesuit preacher out in April. Research led to finding of unpublished texts. For the first time, the complete work of Father António Vieira will be gathered, including letters, sermons, prophecy, politics, theater, including unpublished texts – the edition of 30 volumes by Círculo de Leitores will cost €500 000 euros and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) is the main sponsor, joining the University of Lisbon (UL).” Read full story in Público.

University of Lisbon Staff – II Convention

The II Convention of the University of Lisbon Staff was held on the 5th of March at the Rectory of the University of Lisbon. Under the theme “UL-UTL Merger: What’s next? Proposals for New University”, this Convention provided an opportunity to discuss aspects of the overall organization of the University, the staff representation in the institution’s management organisms and the organization of technical and administrative services. 12th International Surgery Meeting

The 12th International Surgery Meeting was held on 18-20 February at FMUL’s Aula Magna. It was organized by the Surgery Department of Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte (Northern Lisbon Hospital Centre) – Santa Maria Hospital and Pulido Valente Hospital – under the direction of Professor Henrique Bicha Castelo. Doctors, nurses, medical students and many other professionals associated either directly or indirectly to the health sector attended the meeting. The topics presented included: “Breast Cancer”, “Oesophagus and Stomach”, Infection and Surgery”, “Endocrine Surgery”, From Evidence-based Medicine to Clinical Evidence”, and “Infection in Surgery”, among others. Workshop on blood-brain barrier

   The workshop “Beating the Blood-Brain and Other Blood Barriers” took place on 6-8 February 2013 at the Egas Moniz building, as part of the project funded by the European Commission “Selected peptides as drug candidates directed to pain and neurodegeneration”coordinated by Professor Miguel Castanho (Biochemistry Institute) under the Institute of Molecular Medicine. Reinforcing the “Food Program” at the University of Lisbon

The Food Program at the University of Lisbon (UL) is ongoing. It is an innovative program aimed to provide all students adequate meals. In this sense, the bars and canteens in the UL faculties and institutes will provide meals for € 2.40 to all UL students. The menu includes a full meal: soup, main course, dessert, bread and drink. Cinema at the Rectory

The sessions will take place weekly between January 31 and May 16, 2013. Each session begins with a presentation of the film. Some sessions will be followed by a debate with participation of experts. Admission is free, but subject to room capacity. Read More.

Solar photovoltaic panels in the University of Lisbon

The University of Lisbon (UL) is connecting five units of electricity production from solar photovoltaic panels. This constitutes the first phase of a larger project that aims to achieve, by October 2013, a total of 2.8 MW of installed capacity across the University, through the placement of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of schools, parking lots and recreational areas. VITHEA – Computer application to help patients suffering from aphasia

The Portuguese Society for the Study and Intervention in Mourning, in collaboration with the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Lisbon and the Centre for the Academic Study and Intervention in Mourning/Bioethics Centre of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, will hold the 2nd Congress “Mourning in Portugal” on 19 and 20 April 2013 at the Amphitheatre of the Faculty of Psychology. Uma instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social, que apoia cerca de 95 crianças carenciadas (dos 1 aos 6 anos de idade) da creche e do pré-escolar.
