But of course, it is students who give a unique life to a university campus. Their youth (that period of life in which much is defined), irreverence, the constant renewal, makes […]

The Newsletter Editorial Team interviewed Professor António Barbosa, Guest Auxiliary Professor with Aggregation of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, Director of the Bioethics Centre and Coordinator of the Palliative Care Unit and of the Academic Unit for Studies and Action on Mourning. Faculty of Medicine Bioethics Centre

BIOETHICS CENTRE INTRODUCTION At a time of profound changes in patterns of morbidity, rapid advance of techno-science and celebration of alterity, there have been remarkable successes in the health field, alongside increased vulnerabilities in a complex and uncertain world. Health professionals suddenly find themselves both brokered as unconditional supporters of patients and, at the same time, as rational arms of the state in the micro-allocation of resources. Given the risk of their ethos being suffocated, as it is now subject to other attractors (which is important to reflect upon), it is necessary to hydrate, nourish from the inside, reconvert and […]

Master Degree in Bioethics – A Student’s Perspective

The Master Degree in Bioethics of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL), which has been taught for over a decade, is undoubtedly a major reference in bioethical education in Portugal. On the one hand, its main characteristics are scientific and pedagogical rigour and, on the other, it offers a multidisciplinary, broad, up to date, and attentive approach to ethical issues. Despite being taught at a Faculty of Medicine, it does not offer a strictly clinical perspective of ethical issues, favouring, instead, a multifaceted view of bioethics. The structure of the degree enables consistent and multidisciplinary learning […]

In the last decade, palliative care has been gradually pervading clinical practice, research, education, and society. Training plays a critical role in the quality of the […]
