The year 2012 will be marked by the passing of José Francisco David Ferreira, Distinguished Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon and a towering figure of Medicine and Science in our country. Howard Hughes Medical Institute honours Five Portuguese Scientists

“They are the people who, ten years from now, we expect to be the scientific leaders of their countries” Robert Tijan, President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is a major philanthropic institution worldwide in the field of biomedical sciences. Eighth Edition of L’Oreal Portugal Medals of Honour for Women in Science

Three projects were awarded medals in the fields of Breast Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis and Pulmonary Collapse, each receiving a funding of 20 thousand Euros. Open to all female researchers working in Portugal in the field of Life and Environmental Sciences aged up to 35 and holders of PhDs for no more than five years, the programme L’Oreal Portugal Medals of Honour for Women in Science has supported, up to the current edition, 25 young scientists. The Institute for Advanced Training (IFA) of the Faculty of Medicine organizes several continuing education vocational courses every year. These courses are aimed at a diverse audience and organized according to the “Bologna Process”, conferring ECTS whose number depends on the length of the course. The Institute for Advanced Training (IFA) of the Faculty of Medicine organizes Professional Specialization Postgraduate Courses with the duration of one year and assigning 60 ECTS. Successful completion of these courses is attested by a diploma. The University Clinic of Infectious Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon works together with the Infectious Diseases Department of the Northern Lisbon Hospital Centre. This academic unit is led by Professor Francisco Antunes. In undergraduate education, the practical component of the subject Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine takes place at the Inpatient, Intensive Care and Ambulatory Units. A Day at the Faculty

   The initiative “A Day at the Faculty” came from the idea of bringing the FMUL Staff closer together on a special, entertaining and educational day. The Faculty of Giving promoted and organized the event which took place on January 7 and was attended by 116 participants, including 53 children. FMUL Students were invited by the AEFML to participate, teaching children how a diagnosis is made, how to perform tests, a surgery, in broad terms. Vamos por Portugal a dançar is a national initiative of the Dê Mais Coração (Give More Heart) Association – Movimento Daniela, which aims to raise money, through dance, for the Heart Institute of Mozambique (ICOR) to save the lives of children with heart problems.
