Editorial Note
FMUL – 2012 and the Future

This first 2012 edition of the Newsletter is totally devoted to addressing the challenges of the present and of the future, in the short, medium and long term. With regard to FMUL internal matters, we emphasise from the outset two texts expressing the opinions of Professors J. Fernandes e Fernandes, “2012: Difficulties and Opportunity” and of J. Lobo Antunes, “The project for the merger between the Classical University and the Technical University of Lisbon”, which address precisely some of the biggest challenges currently faced by our common home and which will impact on the future of Portuguese society. The Board […]

FMUL News
2012 – Difficulties and Opportunity

Professor Doutor José Fernandes e Fernandes Diretor da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa The year of 2012 will certainly be difficult for academic institutions: a reduction in the budget of the UL, blocking of revenue and the substantial increase in the cost of goods, energy, equipment etc. are real situations with a negative impact for the fulfilment of the mission and the management of the Faculty of Medicine. The reduction of FMUL’s public budget in 2011, the renegotiation of the teaching contracts with the Air Force and the Navy and a decrease in the demand for advanced training […]

The project for the merger between the Classical University and the Technical University of Lisbon

J. Lobo Antunes In recent months, the heads of the Classical (UC) and Technical (UT) universities of Lisbon have been deeply engaged in the possible merger of the two institutions, in fulfilment of a decision emanating from their General Councils. At a time when the need to reorganise the network of university and polytechnic education is generally accepted, this initiative has been very positively received by the schools of both universities. Several factors may contribute to the success of this project. Firstly, the similarity in size, with regard to, for example, budget, number of lecturers, students, and educational programmes. Secondly, […]

This framework allowed gearing […]

Doctoral Programme of the Lisbon Academic Medical Centre

As part of the Lisbon Academic Medical Centre, FMUL, IMM and HSM-CHLN designed a joint PhD programme: the Doctoral Programme of the Lisbon Academic Medical Centre, which focuses on research projects of excellence and includes a flexible training component by modules. The PhD Programme offered by CAML is research oriented and aims to encourage clinicians to ask their patients new questions and bring them to the laboratory and, on the other hand, to make them take questions from the laboratory back into their clinical practice. By bringing together medical and non-medical researchers, the programme encourages new collaborative approaches and more […]

New Building of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon

The beginning  The first preliminary programme, led by Architect Teresa Carvalho, is dated March 2000. It envisaged the construction of a Laboratory for Research and Teaching in Medical Microbiology to replace the Câmara Pestana Bacteriological Institute to be given to the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon (UNL) and which would be adjacent to the Egas Moniz Building due to the complementary of some areas that had been programmed, namely the vivarium, the classes for theoretical classes and the library. The estimated cost for a total gross area of 7,580 m2, excluding furniture and laboratory equipment, […]
