The last edition of 2011 of the Newsletter marks the end of another productive year for the team that tried its best to let readers know a bit more about the life of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL). Award to the University of Lisbon

  His Excellency the President, Professor Cavaco Silva, awarded the University of Lisbon one of the most important honours, the Military Order of Sant’Iago de Espada, which distinguishes literary, scientific and artistic merit. It is, thus, the country’s highest award for scientific institutions. 55th Edition of the Pfizer Research Awards

On 17 November last, in the year that the Pfizer Awards celebrate their 55th anniversary, three research projects were given awards: two projects in Basic Research and one in Clinical Research. Launching Event of the Smile Mission

  The Smile Mission is an unprecedented project in Portugal operating in the area of health. Over several years, this project has worked with doctors and health professionals to foster increased humanization of services and to provide a better technical service through the donation of equipment. Through the sale of Leopoldina products at Continente hypermarkets, the Smile Mission raises funds that are used in projects that promote better quality of life for children and seniors. The number of students studying at FMUL has grown over the years, thereby increasing the number of requirements at various levels, particularly in administrative terms. Medical Screening Campaign

The Faculty to Help Project  has undertaken an initiative directed to the non-teaching staff, which aimed at screening for some diseases, in partnership with the Clínica Universitária de Medicina I (University Medical Clinic I). This initiative took place on 22 and 23 November and had a large support since its release, with the participation of 63 employees The process began with participants completing a questionnaire regarding lifestyle (previously diagnosed diseases, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, height), which was then sent to two doctors responsible for consulting. Food Bank Against Hunger – Food Collection Campaign – November 2011

  In the past week-end of 26 and 27 November, the University of Lisbon Shared Services and the Faculty of Medicine, through its Faculty to Help Project, joined a Food Bank Against Hunger campaign to collect food. The various teams were, during the week-end, at the Pingo Doce supermarket representing the University of Lisbon, where they managed to collect a total of 3,587 pounds of food, to be distributed to those most in need.   This year, the Student’s Association of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon organized, once more, the event “Hospital for the Little Ones”, which was held on 21-26 November at the Canteen of the Social Services. This article intends to evaluate the satisfaction and perceived quality by the users of the Neonatology Unit of the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, Portugal.
