Publishing Activity in the University Dermatology Clinic

In the University Dermatology and Venereology Clinic the university vocation (research as a form of renewing knowledge; teaching as a form of transmitting and spreading knowledge; preserving as a form of keeping the evolution of the flow of knowledge clear) has always been present since its foundation, alongside the medical aid component. One of the ways of transmitting and diffusing knowledge, both in support for teaching and for technical, specifically medical, training, also being a form of a future memory of the state of knowledge at a given moment, is the production of books. Over the years in clinical practice, […]

Malignant Cutaneous Melanoma – Criteria for Diagnosis and Prognosis Factors

Introduction Malignant melanoma (MM) corresponds to a malign neoplasia of melanocytes, which is resistant both to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and therefore its preferred treatment is surgical. Due to its high metastatic potential, the main aim is to diagnose and treat in the early stages of the illness. The first publication of this tumour was carried out by the French doctor René Laennec in 1806.(1) On skin, MM usually begins on the epidermis from a mutation taking place in the melanocyte found there. It is termed in situ MM when it is confined to the epidermis, here including the anexial epithelial […]

100 Years of Medicine: a Historical Perspective [1910-2010] Part III

Molecular Biology In 1944, in his book What is Life?, the Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger established the foundations of molecular biology, the area of biology that characterises, isolates and manipulates the molecular components of cells and organisms (almost four decades after Bateson, in 1905, had defined genetics, the science of hereditariness and variation). These molecular components include proteins, RNA and DNA. The (double helix) structure of the molecules of the latter was discovered in 1953 by the biologist James Watson, from the USA, and by the physicists Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, from Britain, and Rosalind Franklin, also from the USA. Researching Science and Health

Once again we are giving out information about on-line resources, which may be personal pages, blogs, institutional portals etc. We will grant special attention to those that are easy to use and, preferentially, free to access. A substantial part of these will be dedicated to medical sciences. Bring us your suggestions and comments! WolframAlpha It has already been stated about WolframAlpha that it may become as influential in our work as Google. It is a computational knowledge engine developed by Wolfram Research. WolframAlpha presents systematically organized information, intending to respond directly to the search questions and expressions introduced, as opposed […]
