On Books and Medicine over the Last Hundred Years: a Brief and Overall Reflection

The period in which we live is witnessing the development of the new information technologies at a dizzying pace, in a manner that is substantially transforming not only the traditional paradigms of access to information and the methods and forms of communication, but also the very habits of life and organisation of thought. This development has been so striking in our work and in our lives that we end up undervaluing and forgetting previous stages, with it becoming necessary to recall them in ways that sometimes seem like a longing for the past or sound like old-fashioned things. And for […]

During this period medicine evolved much more than in millennia of history. Reforms in Medical Teaching In 1910 the American scholar Abraham Flexner produced his famous report Medical Education in the United States and Canada, the conclusions and proposals of which would be at the origin of important changes […]

Terry Fox Grants

The Terry Fox grants were born out of the courage and the dream of a young Canadian. Terry Fox was a young man aged 18 who was diagnosed with bone cancer and who, after hospitalisation and daily contact with the suffering of other young people who also had cancer, decided to walk across Canada in order to raise funds for the research, treatment and cure for this illness. This “run” of his, which took place in 1980, became known as the “Hope Marathon”. Terry ended up dying in June 1981, but since then Terry Fox races are held all over […]

“Manual of Palliative Care”, 2nd edition, revised and expanded

The Manual of Palliative Care was particularly well accepted by health professionals, and the rapid disappearance of the available copies of the first edition clearly shows the potential interest for this area of health care, which was the main motivation for the preparation of this second revised and expanded edition. The same desire led us to make available a set of understandable, updated and easily accessed information items that are based on selected research and the clinical experience and personal reflections of the authors, useful for different health professionals who in one way or another are involved in the practice […]

Research and Advanced Education
Masters Course in Palliative Care

Today palliative care represents a reference standard of care for patients with advanced chronic illnesses and for their families. This field of knowledge comes from the increasing ageing of the population and the corresponding change in patterns of mortality and morbility, as well as a societal context of increasing individualisation of family ties, but also as a reaction to an increase in suffering in vulnerable populations, through abandonment or through therapeutic obstinacy in a society that is increasingly technology-based. Palliative care has progressively been implanted over the last decade into the clinical area, into research, into teaching and into society. […]
