Editorial Note
Nota Editorial

The team of Doctor Henrique Veiga-Fernandes makes a revolutionary discovery on bone marrow stem stells       The team of researchers led by Professor Henrique Veiga-Fernandes, from the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, has discovered a new mechanism which controls the survival, expansion and function of bone marrow stem cells. Haematopoietic stem cells (HSC) give origin to all blood cells. The transplantation of these cells has been extensively used in treating various diseases, with bone marrow, umbilical cord blood and peripheral blood progenitor cells as their main source. Professor Tiago Fleming Outeiro and his team make progress on Parkinson’s disease

An international team of scientists, led by Portuguese researcher Tiago Fleming Outeiro, has established that two proteins associated with Parkinson’s diseaseinteract and react to genetic mutations. The discovery may be a “key” that could open the door to new possibilities of treatment for the disease. The proteins in question are DJ-1 and alfa-synuclein. It is known that modifications in the genes encoding these two proteins are responsible for common types of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative pathology of the nervous system which manifests itself through tremours, stiffness, instability of posture and walking abnormalities. “Our study has demonstrated that […]

Team at IMM-FMUL has identified a gene that could play an important role in Infantile Leukaemia

An article presenting the results of three years investigation carried out by a team of researchers at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon was published recently in the scientific journal “Oncogene”. Using a pharmacological composition, the team discovered how to slow down the evolution of a form of leukaemia frequently found in children. This discovery could lead to the development of an alternative treatment for this form of cancer that is potentially “less noxious” to patients than the existing one. “We found that patients with acute lymphoblastic T-cell leukaemia, which is a very […]
