Editorial Note
JUST AS WELL!

Following a series of editions of News@FMUL dedicated to Institutes, Clinics and Laboratories of FMUL, now it was the turn of the Institute of Biochemistry. News@FMUL publishes articles on the scientific activity, pedagogical innovation and internationalization of this Institute. In addition, I was invited to write this editorial note. Despite this context, I choose to deviate from the Institute of Biochemistry as a topic to reflect instead about FMUL as a whole in its multiple fronts: science, pedagogical innovation, clinical activity and internationalization. It is a timely reflection because the 2013 Activity Report of FMUL’s Director and the Action Programme […]

IMM-FMUL leads European consortium on HIV

The Institute of Molecular Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (IMM-FMUL) leads a Consortium of three countries in a European project about HIV, with funding of about four hundred thousand euros. For Professor Miguel Castanho, Director of the laboratory at the IMM-FMUL and leader of the HIVERA project, the leadership of this Consortium represents a unique opportunity for Portuguese research, since its goal is to get innovative drugs, combine them and ensure a better distribution within the human body. This project brings together the expertise of four teams from three countries: Portugal, France and Romania, with the […]

IMM-FMUL research: Lack of Vitamin A in pregnancy restricts children’s resistance to infections

Results published in Nature show that vitamin A deficiency in the diet of mothers during pregnancy reduces their children’s resistance to infections. A team of researchers of the Institute of Molecular Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (IMM-FMUL), coordinated by Henrique Veiga Fernandes, discovered an important link between the diet of pregnant women and foetal development. Research conducted in animal models has shown that maternal diet has an irreversible impact on the development of the immune systems of the foetus, affecting his ability to control infections after birth. Interview with Professor Miguel Castanho, Director of the Institute of Biochemistry

The newsletter of FMUL interviewed the Director of the Institute of Biochemistry of the Faculty to know more about this unit and the projects it conducts. Newsletter: what can you tell us about the origin of the Institute? Professor Miguel Castanho: most people will not be aware of this, but Biochemistry in Portugal was born here. Historically, there are two major sources for Biochemistry in Portugal. One is Organic Chemistry. Germany was the birthplace of Organic Chemistry in Europe, and it entered Portugal thanks to a German researcher called Kurt Jacobson. The other is Physiological Chemistry, which is more associated […]

What are some of the researchers who studied at the Institute of Biochemistry doing?

The primary objective of the Institute of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon is to contribute positively and actively to teaching and research of excellence. Its mission is teaching and research and many of those who come to us receive a scientific, technical and laboratory education that enables them to start their professional activity in distinct contexts. The Editorial Team of the Newsletter went looking for some Ph.D. holders who studied at the Institute of Biochemistry and asked them a few questions.    Ana Salomé Veiga                         Henri Franquelim                       Sónia Henriques […]

Introducing the Institute of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon

The Institute of Biochemistry (IBq) was created in 1982 by a group of lecturers and researchers from the Institute of Physiological Chemistry (IQF), founded in 1965. The structural merger of the two institutes took place in 1999, on the occasion of the retirement of the Director of the IQF, Professor Carlos Manso, and the lecturers and researchers of the IBq moved to the facilities of the IQF under the leadership of the founder of the IBq, Professor Martins e Silva. Professor Carlota Saldanha was Acting Director of the IBq between 2001 and 2007. In 2004, the IBq moved to the […]

Internationalization in the Institute of Biochemistry (2009-2014)

The development of competitive research projects is closely linked to partnerships and collaborations that allow synergies and the suitability of partners to the know-how required for each task. In a country the size of Portugal, this solid and competitive network could not be confined just to the national scientific community. This is also the case of the Institute of Biochemistry of FMUL, which, in all international articles published between 2009 and 2014, has had the co-authorship of researchers from institutions from 16 countries across America, Asia, Europe and Oceania: Germany, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, Spain, United States, Holland, […]

One of the characteristics of the research carried out at the Institute of Biochemistry is that it engages researchers with different backgrounds, particularly […]
