Editorial Note
Message from the President of the Students’ Association

The beginning of the present academic year is in itself a symbolic moment of the ending and starting of two eras in the life of our beloved Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. It closes a period of transition to the Curricular Reform that started in 2007, with this being the first academic year in which all the students are covered by the restructuring that the faculty underwent. There was great scepticism and initial fear around the implementation of this change in the FMUL teaching philosophy – as indeed some of the longest-lasting of us will remember from […]

Advanced Training at IMM

The Communication and Training Unit (UCOM) of the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) is complementary and transversal to the research units. This unit focuses on three themes: communication; funding and advanced training, each coordinated by a PhD researcher. The aim is to approach areas, which although not generating scientific knowledge, are vital for research, in a dedicated and professional manner, and to allow the remaining researchers and respective units the time for “their science”. The UCOM team has six people who have opted for a career in science communication and management. We work in the “backstage of science” supporting researchers […]

Palmela was chosen to be the “City of Wine 2009”, and has carried out a vast variety of annual events dedicated to the culture of wine. João square and in the premises of the Rota de Vinhos association in Palmela. Open Space
It wasn’t just worth the effort, it was worth the joy

Seven years is twenty percent of my life. I can still remember coming into the messy, cluttered-up corridor where the administrative services of the faculty were located, with my “permit” in my hand and someone turning round and saying to me from the end of the corridor, “students’ business is further down, this is for staff and teachers”. This was my welcome to the faculty. I was a boy, with a boyish face, tennis shoes and jeans, but with my heart full of ambition and with the fear befitting someone moving to something they hardly know (now I would say […]

Contrasting Summer Training Courses

From the UK to Turkey I was very happy when I found out I had been placed in the UK, in Nottingham, for a clinical interchange, when I was in Paris on the Erasmus programme. The opportunity to do a training period in such a prestigious country, and to meet other students from around the world, was a promising prospect. And it lived up to my expectations. Nottingham is a small, charming city, known as being the birthplace of Robin Hood. Despite having an impeccable transportation network, it wasn’t necessary to use it, as the distances between the centre, the […]

YES Meeting 2009

The YES Meeting, a captivating condensing of Young European Scientist Meeting, held its fourth edition last September in the city of Oporto. After three editions of unanimous success, YES is back, bringing everything it has always represented to Oporto, “the unconquered city”: young people, several different nationalities, debates on current issues and social activities, setting them perfectly well within the unmistakable and unique academic and social spirit of the city of Oporto. This annual event brings together students from several different degree course to discuss science, and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) was, as is […]

Blog, the friend of the Masters in Emerging Infectious Diseases

This Masters course was born in 2003. It was called Emerging Infectious Diseases. At that time no one imagined that over time others with the same surname would be born. Perhaps thanks to the coronavirus, which appeared and rapidly caused disease in several thousand people (2003) [1]. But over its short lifetime the Masters course had to live alongside other emerging diseases: plague in Algeria (2003) [2], Ebola in the Sudan (2004), yellow fever in Mali (2005) [3], plague in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2006), cholera in Luanda, Angola (2006) [4], Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the […]

In Praise of

The Academic Services and the Treasury hereby publicly make praise of the Honourable Secretary Coordinator, Dr. David João Varela Xavier, at a time that is a mixture of joy and sadness, given the notice of the end of his mandate. Joy, because we know that he is going to a place that will afford him new challenges and possibilities of Professional promotion; sadness because he leaves a gap that will be very difficult to fill. A secretary who demonstrated solid and balanced leadership, and brought us aims that had long been needed in these areas, aims which he not only […]

Platform for Monitoring Access to Medicine FMUL (2000 to 2009)

The Platform for Monitoring Access to Medicine is an initiative by the Planning and Evaluation Office (GPA) and originated in the use and integration of data worked periodically by this office relative to access to Portuguese medicine courses and an operationalising of internal databases and those of the University of Lisbon (UL). This publication is a pioneer work in the UL as it allows one to see a national ranking (access to Medicine) counterpoising results from one faculty to other similar institutions on the national level. The aim of the platform is to identify indicators that allow one to (i) […]
