Editorial Note
From Assessment to Training, Preparing the Future

We have come to the end of another academic year, the students have almost gone and the office staff and teachers are mostly recharging their batteries for yet another year to come. Taking stock of this, I might say that for the office staff this year was the year of assessment and training. What I mean by this is that we have finally managed to go further into the application of the Integrated System of Assessment of the Performance of the Civil Service (SIADAP), and at the same time there has been considerable investment in staff training, both academically and […]

Sun, Photo-ageing and Skin Cancer

The ageing of the tegument is an irreversible biological phenomenon common to all animals. Cutaneous ageing is complex, and results from the sum of an intrinsic process and of environmental aggressions, of which solar radiation most stands out. In short one might say that cutaneous ageing depends on the intrinsic mechanism, on external factors and on alterations to other organs. Resulting from this triad of influences are structural, biochemical and functional modifications that affect the epidermis, dermis and annexes. Some of the alterations to the cutaneous tegument of older people are easy to detect: the skin, mainly in the exposed […]

Considering the urgent need to preserve and dynamise this heritage, in September 2003 the direction of the faculty decided to reorganise its Museological Nucleus, having appointed Manuel Valente Alves to direct and coordinate the works leading to carrying out the process, the first steps toward the creation of the Museum of Medicine. The Egas Moniz Building and the New Demands for Energy Efficiency

The subject of energy efficiency has given rise to many studies, seminars, courses, reports and articles, but above all it has aroused the curiosity of all those who care about environmental issues, in an attempt to unite progress to an efficient use of the available resources. If we take into account that the majority of us work in buildings the project and construction of which were not prepared to be energy efficient, or at least to achieve very low levels of energy consumption, then the work and effort to reduce energy use becomes even more difficult. Buildings in general consume […]

Evaluation of Performance – Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon

To speak about evaluation of performance in the Public Service means much more than giving a numerical value between 0 and 5 to the performance demonstrated and measured over a calendar year. The introduction of the Integrated System of Public Service Performance Evaluation – SIADAP – in 2004, represented a break with the usual technical-administrative practices, based on legal rules or those introduced into the services as perfect models in bureaucratic terms, in the manner of usucaption. With it emerge management concepts that until that time had been restricted to the private sector, such as: – Mission, or what we […]
