FMUL challenges in 2009-2010

The coming academic year, 2009-2010, is the one in which for the first time all three years of the first cycle of basic studies in the Integrated Masters Course in Medicine – CMIM – follows the new curricular reform: semesters; effective integration (and not mere collage or juxtaposition) of areas and teaching-learning methodologies and assessment; bringing forward of clinical contact; greater depth in ethical, humanitarian and university surroundings. It is this philosophy and practice that it is intended to set up and be stimulated by teachers and students. Even, or above all, when this may force us to review or […]

Relationship between conservation of Urban Forest resources, Science and Public Health

Despite life expectancy having substantially increased over the last century, there is still a great occurrence of diseases related to environmental problems associated to urban development. These problems are above all due to the releasing of atmospheric pollutants coming from road traffic. Despite the European Union being strict in matters of management and control of emissions coming from road vehicles, its positive effect on the quality of urban air is now threatened by the increasing number of vehicles. Environmental pollution is today one of the greatest factors in the degrading of air quality and, in general, of the quality of […]

Children’s Day

Children’s Days are days of devotion. We have to devote our lives to the construction of a culture of the child for the child. Only this can be our major investment as citizens and professionals caring for or looking after the inalienable higher interests of the child. There can be no place for mistakes, for ambiguities, for rites of passage. There may be those who say that it is an affront to speak in the name of a child. I would say that it is a challenge. An enormous and total challenge that forces us to delve into the identity […]

More and Better
“Grandparents’ Reason”

The book “A razão dos avós” (Grandparents’ Reason), published by Editorial Caminho in 2008, starts out by stressing the importance of grandparents in today’s society. They are the ones who guarantee the continuity of the family in many cases when divorce risks separating the members or in situations where the parents have become apart for other reasons. They now do this for much longer, as improved health care means that they live much longer: suffice to say that at the beginning of the XX century only one in tem people lived more than sixty years, while in 2000 only one […]
