Brain Week

Open Day  “What’s in your head?”  The complexity of the human brain has always aroused curiosity, doubts and, inevitably, increased difficulty in understanding it as a whole. Aware of the obstacles inherent to the understanding of the brain, the Portuguese Society of Neurosciences presented the fifth edition of the Brain Week, an initiative that intends to bring the scientific community closer to the population, and which includes several different activities. In the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), the Brain Week was celebrated through an “Open Day”, in which the institute opened its doors to students from several Lisbon secondary schools, […]

Moodle: first you find it strange, then you get involved

Not all that glitters is gold and not that is multimedia is pedagogically good. No matter how sophisticated the design is or the technical resources are, we often do not understand what it is that a multimedia didactics brings more than a good book, for example. In theoretical classes and oral presentations, moving graphs, shaded colours, 3D shading effects, may even have a perverse effect, given that the form may be distracting in relation to the content. On Internet portals the same is true. However, computerised tools also have virtues, which may be turned into major advantages when used carefully […]

E- learning at the FMUL- experience as a student

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) was the first institution in the world to consider Sleep Medicine as a reality nowadays and, for this reason, to develop a Masters course in this field. In the third edition of this Masters, in which I participated, there was the implementing of a European project for the creating of a teaching platform with the aid of computer technology and distance learning. Genetics of CVAs – The H1 Mitochondrial Haplogroup reduces the Risk of Ischemic Strokes (CVA)

Thanks: the Genetics of Cerebral Vascular Accidents project is a result of the support given by the AstraZeneca Foundation 3rd Research Grant. The publication of this article follows the presenting of the results of the 11th “Education through Science” workshop organised by the Support for Scientific, Technological and Innovation Research Office (GAPIC). Moments
Mother

Maternity is the high point in the life of a woman! Despite my four wonderful children, I do not know whether I will be able to explain the meaning of “Mother”. I am sure I will take a lifetime to discover it … The funny thing is that when I think of the word “Mother” I remember my own. A beautiful woman, full of life and energy, strong and a good companion, always present, who taught me the meaning of maternity. I see my mother’s words so often in the things I say to my children … For me the […]
