Editorial Note
Message from the Director of the Faculty of Medicine

My current mandate as the Dean of the FMUL will soon be over, after the election of the President of the Faculty Assembly, a process that is a part of the context of renewal of the University, marked out by the approving of the new Statutes of the UL and by the election of its chancellor. Also taking place at the FMUL were the drawing up and approval of its new Statutes and the elections to its governing bodies, namely the Faculty Assembly and its Scientific and Pedagogical Councils. This succession of events demands a new electoral process for the […]

The Evolution of the Curricular Reform of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon

Institutions are living organisations and are thus in constant evolution. This is the case of universities, and naturally of medicine faculties. In general, the evolution of this type of institutions does not develop in a uniform manner, but through phases in which it is often the institution itself that starts to question its own method of working and then starts a process of reform through which it may achieve a new stage of improving its performance. This is what happened with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) in 2005 Acknowledging that institutions’ capacity for self-reform is […]

Letter to a teacher at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon

Dear Colleague and Friend The elections are the culminating point of the transformation that the new law for universities has imposed; for three decades the Faculty had been carrying out its duty with a noble spirit and civic responsibility, and punctually keeping to schedules, guaranteeing its universality and stimulating participation on the part of teachers, technicians and students. It is a difficult and generous task that is misunderstood by many people given its multiple business, its teaching, hospital and scientific obligations, and the governing of its units, which need daily concern in order to ensure their quality. At this precise […]

Tutorial Clinical Practice in Tropical Medicina – Training Periods in Angola and Cape Verde

In 1999 the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) created the subject of Tropical Medicine as an optional discipline in order to make medicine students sensitive to the learning and specialising of the identification of problems related to public health in tropical regions, the observation and identification of the main agents or parasite infections, the laboratory identification of the main tropical haematological and dermatological diseases and the observation of clinical cases. Difficulty in finding patients with genuinely tropical pathology in Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital and affiliated hospitals led to the need to create cooperation protocols with hospitals […]

Digital Repository

Taking advantage of the space provided by the FMUL Newsletter for reflection on some of the both present and future resources available to all those who work, teach, study or research at the University of Lisbon, we believe that this is a timely moment to mention its recently created Digital Repository. In a short note of historical framing, it should be stated that over the last years digital repositories have been seen as a resource for conserving and preserving the vast institutional holdings on a digital support so that the information will be rapidly recovered and accessible at a distance, […]

Remodellings in our School

As a part of our faculty’s quality policy, several remodelling works are being undertaken with a view to improving not only the physical working conditions but also the laboratories and teaching and research spaces. The spaces that are a part of the building shared with the Santa Maria Hospital are now somewhat degraded after long use. Many of the major interventions, such as the changing of the electrical installations, plumbing and adapting to today’s new functional demands have been carried out for the first time over recent years. The work by the services responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of […]
