From July 15th-19th, a group of students learned how they could develop scientific research and writing skills: from data to publication; in close contact with the Sintra Cresce Saudável Project, promoted by the Sintra City Council and managed, in its technical-scientific aspect, by the FMUL Nutrition Laboratory. They came to realise that the Nutrition Laboratory, as a research unit, can serve the incentive and execution of scientific writing, in practical assignments. Regarding these days of Summer School as a success and a new level for the […]

III Sessão NeuroSeS

A terceira sessão dos encontros-almoço NeuroSeS (Neurociências de Translação), decorreu no passado dia 9 de Julho e contou com a participação de 60 pessoas. A discussão versou sobre o tema “Spinal cord injury: what can we learn for animal models?” apresentado pela investigadora Leonor Saúde.

GAPIC: The Student Perspective

Students of the FMUL have always been driven by a relentless will to explore the dimension of scientific and clinical research, supplementing the core curriculum of the Integrated Master’s in Medicine. In the long term, this contributes to the training of doctors who are more informed and are better able to stand out on an international level, without forgetting that it can even radically contribute to many of their careers being dedicated to research. This interest and will to go further on the part of students of the FMUL has been materialised, largely thanks to the work done by […]

The steps and moments on the path of a GAPIC Alumni

Institutional anniversaries are full of pose and formality, but there are many stories hidden within them, the people who support them and the reflections they provide. These 30 years of GAPIC deserve it and are full of these stories; I had the privilege and the opportunity to count myself among them. More than two decades ago, I participated as a medical student in more than one edition of undergraduate scientific research support programmes. I went from the Delta-Notch pathway with Professor Domingos Henrique to late literate cognition with Professor Castro-Caldas. Many years later I became a paediatrician, teacher and clinical […]

“Education through Science” Programme – GAPIC, 30 years Promoting Science

The “Education through Science” Programme (PEC) was created in 1997 as a programme of support for undergraduate students to conduct scientific research. Through the PEC, students participate directly in outlining and executing laboratory or clinical research projects, as part of a team made up of the FMUL’s research unit, the Institute of Molecular Medicine (iMM) or the Santa Maria Hospital (HSM), under supervision of a tutor In 2015, the PEC was reinforced by CHULN/FMUL Grants, funded by the CHULN, and allocated to projects with a predominant clinical component, to carry out at CHULN Clinics and Laboratories. Over 23 editions, the […]

Blood vessel communication tools and how zebrafish can help find new drugs to treat spinal cord injuries

In this edition of iMM Corner, we find out about two more scientific articles: The latest project by the research group led by Leonor Saúde, published this week in the Scientific Reports journal, a platform was developed that uses zebrafish to accelerate the discovery of new drugs to treat spinal cord injuries. This project is the proof-of-concept that, combined with drug repositioning strategies, it has the potential to accelerate the period from the discovery of new therapeutic targets to their clinical use. A key element in generating a functional vascular system is the collective migration of endothelial cells that form […]

Accelerating the discovery of new drugs to treat spinal cord injuries using zebrafish

The new platform enables effective drug screening and selection A research team led by Leonor Saúde, lead researcher at iMM and Invited Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, in partnership with the iMM-based company Technophage, SA, have devised a simple and effective platform that uses zebrafish to discover and identify new drugs to treat spinal cord injuries. This open-access report published this week on the scientific journal Scientific Reports*, is the proof-of-concept that, combined with drug repositioning strategies, it has the potential to accelerate the period from the discovery of new therapeutic targets to […]

How to align communication skills

New study explains blood vessel physical communication An organized network of blood vessels is essential for life, and this organization is altered in many diseases, including cancer, retinopathy, and arteriovenous malformations. A key element in generating a functional vascular system is the collective migration of endothelial cells that form the inner lining of blood vessels. However, the regulation mechanisms of this collective migration are not known. A new study led by Cláudio Franco, lead researcher at iMM, has found that a molecule called Wnt5a promotes endothelial cell coordination, enhancing physical communication between cells. The report recently published on the open […]

Ana and the memories from the breath of dust

The very first time we spoke, I was struck by the emotion on her face, as she walked into the room that today bears the name of the person who inspired her so much. She described a mix of longing and nostalgia while remembering him. It was December and we were in the David Ferreira Auditorium (Amphitheatre 52), because it was Research Day, a day that GAPIC organises to celebrate scientific research in a Medical School. It had to be his creation if we think about who he was. In 1989 the master crafted one of his best projects, a […]

Professor José David Ferreira – Biographical Note

Professor José Francisco David Ferreira was born in Montargil on the 26th February 1929, and died in Lisbon on the 7th February 2012. Coming from a large family and due to various constraints, he came to Lisbon to be raised by relatives. The 1940’s capital of the last century saw him attending coffee gatherings, reading clandestine works, participating in small conspiracies of a young generation who wanted a new path for our country. That’s when a young David Ferreira gained a political and human awareness that would guide him throughout his life. He attended the Camões High School between 1939 […]
