Editorial Note
The Faculty exists because of the students

In this edition of News, students are featured as they deserve to be. FMUL not only exists for them, but also exists because of them. Our mission is to teach, educate and train, by endowing society with citizens with values and professionals with skills to change the world. It is, thus, natural for us to focus on the students, listen to them and reflect on and with them. The topic of News could not be more relevant or more timely. Students serving on the Pedagogical Council, who are nearing the end of their term of office, and Andreia Daniel, the diligent and highly […]

To all the Academic Community of the FMUL, The strategic action of the FMUL has always been to provide high-quality education, combined with world-class research and a medical practice which relies on the highest level of scientific and technological development. The FMUL sees itself as a modern, innovative and outward-looking institution, with the ability to communicate and strengthen its relationships with the various levels of society in an increasingly global environment. With the aim of placing the Faculty at a competitive level, both nationally and internationally, we have set several goals for 2018, following the main guidelines of the University […]

Professor Fausto J. Pinto becomes member of ANM Brazil

On 9 May, during the Simpósio Fronteiras Cardiologia (Symposium on the Frontiers of Cardiology), which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Professor Fausto J. Pinto was awarded the Doctor’s Diploma by the Federal Univeristy of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the first awarded after the revalidation agreement signed last September and ratified in February 2019 between the two institutions. However, there were more good news coming his way, as Prof. Fausto J. Pinto also became a member of the Brazilian National Academy of Medicine. Founded in 1829, the ANM is one of the oldest medical institutions in the world. According to […]

Ana Rita Mendonça Bello wins the 2019 Professor Francisco Pulido Valente Teaching Award

The Professor Francisco Pulido Valente Teaching Award, currently worth 3,000 euros, was created by the Professor Francisco Pulido Valente Foundation and the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon in 1992, to annually distinguish the student of the degree in Medicine and Surgery with the best grade in Medicine II, that which is regarded as the subject most similar to Medical Clinical Practice, which the Patron used to teach as Full Professor. The Prize was awarded in a public ceremony held on 23 May at the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon. The winner was Ana Rita de Sousa […]

Carolina whose eyes speak for themselves

Carolina Monteiro is not the typical case of someone who wanted to study Medicine since she was born. With a great passion for Cinema, she chose to study Science, an area where she felt she could be of more use to others. And while, on the one hand, it may seem tempting to have a wide range of career prospects, on the other hand, Carolina says that this creates an internal conflict which makes it hard to find out which are one’s real interests in life. It was only in the 11th grade that she got a glimpse of clinical […]

A 6 people conversation…with the Students of the Pedagogical Board

Punctuality is an innate characteristic that I’ve been finding among the students that I’ve been meeting. They arrive right on time. As I meet Catarina Bravo, Joana Bastos, João Torres and Guilherme Vilhais, they come in with a broad smile which shows a natural candour. Some minutes after comes Liliana Pacheco and then Francisco Baptista. They are effective students of the Pedagogical Board at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and ended their term in April, with the exception of Francisco, who was a substitute student during this term, together with Mariana Caetano, Inês Mendo, João Afonso, […]

A class with Professor Susana Constantino

We agreed that I could attend one of her practical Biochemistry classes. We scheduled it for 11 am. I arrive on time, but I find the door closed and I hear her voice inside. I get in with a thousand apologies, thinking to myself, how could I be late for my first class at Medical School? In a room that only has workbenches, fridges and some machines that I am not familiar with yet, there are 9 students, all girls, all with updo hair. The Professor speaks enthusiastically and jigs as if trying to dribble past the exceeded class time […]

Miguel Castanho, the Professor

Teaching Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon for 12 years, Miguel Castanho is Full Professor and member of the School Board. Widely known in the academic and scientific community, he leads a research team at the iMM – MCastanho Lab and is one of the Portuguese scientists who is receiving more funding, the last of which for a project where he is responsible for coordinating a European team. He has already been distinguished with several awards, but some of them have a special flavour: the Golden Harrys for Best Professor of the Year, awarded by the […]

The professor who breaks the ice with the students – Prof. Maria José Diógenes

Professor Maria José Diógenes, in addition to being a teacher at our institution, was also responsible for the organisation and implementation of the Candidate’s Day, which took place on 30 April. We took advantage of this month’s theme on News, as well as the proximity to this event to talk to her about what it is to be a professor, to explore the relationship she establishes with students and the importance of Candidate Day. Talking to Professor Maria José Diógenes is not at all a moment of work. It was rather an enriching moment of learning with lots of smiles […]

The first day visiting the Faculty of Medicine

This is always a morning characterised by good humour; after all, this is always the day when the Faculty of Medicine opens its doors to secondary-school students looking to study at the Institution someday. This year’s Applicant’s Day brings with it a series of innovations: another Graduate Degree being presented, Nutritional Science and the team undergoing changes, with Professor Maria José Diógenes coordinating this event and in tandem with Professor Catarina Sousa Guerreiro. In an informal, relaxed atmosphere, the 130 or so possible applicants meet at the Aula Magna to hear Director Fausto J. Pinto welcome them, together with some […]

More and Better
Article by Professor Miguel Castanho in the Visão magazine

On May 15, the Visão magazine published an opinion piece signed by Miguel Castanho, Full Professor at the FMUL and Group Leader at the iMM – João Lobo Antunes, entitled “The Phantom Agency”. In this piece, the Professor warns of the need to clarify whether the AICIB (Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation) will be implemented; this entity, created by Resolution of the Council of Ministers in 2018, was supposedly aimed at “supporting, financing and promoting clinical research and translation research, as well as biomedical innovation” and has been no more than a mirage so far. Professor Joana Sousa talks about Obesity

On 18 May, Lifestyle Sapo published an article on a rather topical issue: Obesity! According to the General Directorate for Health, this is «probably the most serious public health issue». This article cross-checks data from the World Health Organization and data from «Retrato da Saúde em Portugal (Health Portrait in Portugal)» (National Health Service) for the year 2018. There are about 2 billion people suffering from obesity worldwide and 2.8 million people die from diseases associated with overweight or obesity. In 2018, the number of people suffering from obesity in Portugal corresponded to 60% of the Portuguese population, that is […]

For A Healthy Heart – Healthy Children

We arrived at EB1 – O Leão de Arroios – and the 1st grade room is empty for a few minutes. It’s recess time and the children play effusively outside. In the room we can only hear a fan that spins at full speed, May as only just begun but the heat demands that it works harder to circulate the air. Drawings, collages, desks full of school supplies, behaviour charts and backpacks that flood the floor seem to have a life of their own in a room whose silence will very soon be betrayed. We are welcomed by Professor Célia […]

There are official projects designed for Student Integration.

It was in 2018 that the Faculty acknowledged the importance of the Student Support Office, an issue much debated and defended by the students when the second term of the current Director, Professor Fausto J. Pinto, was announced. In this Office, whose daily work is managed by Ana Rita Sobral, of the Medical School, under the supervision of Executive Director Dr. Luís Pereira, grants for two projects were considered. Coordination grants were awarded to two 4th-year students of Medicine, João Valente (Mentoring) and Romila Ismail (Solvin’it). Although it was only in 2018 that the Student Support Office officially emerged, Mentoring […]

CEMBE: our contribution to value-based healthcare.

The Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Studies (CEMBE) is at the forefront of Value Based Health Care with the new article on controlling hypertension in low- and middle-income countries. Hypertension is the main modifiable risk factor for mortality. Responsible for 1 in 5 deaths worldwide, the exercise of controlling this pathology is nowadays a huge challenge, especially in countries where resources are scarce. Acting in its capacity as partner, the CEMBE was part of the working group, created by the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), which, using the Delphi method * in 18 groups from 15 countries, identified a […]

iMM Corner
The survival of (some) tumour cells and the hideouts of the parasites

In this edition of iMM Corner, we get to know two more scientific articles: The most recent work of the research group led by Claus M. Azzalin, a leading researcher for iMM, featured this week in the Nature Communications journal, shows how a human enzyme called FANCM (Fanconi anaemia, complementation group M) is strictly necessary for the survival of a subgroup of ALT tumour cells. The results suggest that future strategies that target the activity of this molecule may form the basis of a new therapeutic protocol for the treatment of these tumours. In diseases caused by trypanosomes, the parasites reach different organs […]

New study reveals unexpected mechanism of survival of a subset of cancer cells

Embedded at the end of chromosomes are structures called “telomeres” that in normal cells become shorter as cells divide. As the shortening progresses it triggers cell proliferation arrest or death. Cancer cells adopt different strategies to overcome this control mechanism that keeps track of the number of times that a cell has divided. One of these strategies is the alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) pathway, which guarantees unlimited proliferation capability. Now, a research group led by Claus M. Azzalin, group leader at the iMM has discovered that a human enzyme named FANCM (Fanconi anaemia, complementation group M) is absolutely required for […]

Where do parasites hide?

Humans and other animals infected with Trypanosomiasis – diseases caused by trypanosomes such as sleeping sickness and Chagas disease (human) and nagana (cattle) – often do not have parasites in the blood. In an open source review article published recently in the scientific journal Open Biology, of The Royal Society*, the group led by Luísa Figueiredo, a leading researcher for iMM, discusses in which organs these parasites are hidden, the advantages of this tropism and what are the consequences for the severity of the disease. “It is known that in a host, tissue tropism may change during the course of […]

From the Past to the Present
The Teaching of Medicine (part I)

The teaching of medicine is as old as Medicine itself, though it has been practised and understood very differently in various societies and over the thousands of years of Man’s existence on earth. The word Medicine derives from the Latin term mederi, which means to heal, to take care of or to medicate and these have been the main concerns in the fight against the illnesses that have affected Man since the beginning of his existence. Despite the fact that Man has only started populating the planet a million years ago, we know that bacteria, one of the biggest sources […]

Remembering Amato Lusitano

Amato Lusitano or João Rodrigues de Castelo Branco, name for which he remained known for posterity (1511-1568), was a Portuguese physician and humanist (at the time, he used the Latin form Amatus Lusitanus)). He had a troubled course, suffered religious persecution, studied alongside the foremost masters of his time, he knew in depth the work of the ancient authors (Dioscorides, Hippocrates, among others), who he commented and divulged. Some authors place him among the first to know the mechanisms of blood circulation. Today his writings and reflections allow us to”… observe the world in the sixteenth century beyond the purely […]
