News # 88 | Mar. 2019

Editorial Note
“ (…) Finally, man is placed where the earth ends; the woman, where the sky begins .”

Thus ends the poem, The Man and the Woman by Victor Hugo. On the month International Women’s Day is celebrated, News no. 88 was written entirely by women, (not that we want to express a feminist position, but because it must be so, since the editorial team consists only of women). However, it’s our will that all genders feel involved in our content. After all, the 8th of March celebration is nothing more than the desire for a fairer and more balanced and egalitarian society. Far gone are the days where women were relegated to second place in the society. […]

Patrícia Costa Reis – The doctor who pursues autoimmunity

Patrícia Costa Reis is a paediatrician, researcher and a teacher at our Faculty. It was between consultations that we managed to get a hold of her for a brief interview on the research project that launched her into the limelight. After all, being awarded the L’Oréal Prize for Women in Science, as she says: “It is an acknowledgment for what I have already done and a great incentive to continue to do clinical work and research at the same time.”. In a very transparent way, during our conversation, she reveals a focused character and a passion for research on autoimmune […]

Carlos Neves Martins’ timeline

We schedule an interview and cancel it due to conflicting agendas. We reschedule it and he makes it clear that he doesn’t like to miss his appointments. I arrive on time and, in the corridor where we find the Hospital Chapel, there is a large office dominated by a permanent subliminal agitation that always puts some pressure on those who are not familiar with it. While I wait, I wonder if there is ever a right timing to do an interview, but that would be putting a label on people as if their interest in talking about themselves had some […]

Luísa Lopes’ brilliant mind

Her personality reflects the reality of her profession, “get to the point”. Objective and pragmatic, that doesn’t take away her empathy, even for those who meet her for the first time. She prefers to be called simply Luísa, she wears round glasses that, along with short hair, give her grace and make her sophisticated and feminine. It seems like the office where we meet to talk reflects her personality, there are some red and orange gerbera, a Pilates ball that can double as a seat, and a children’s book forgotten on a chair, which reveals her good relationship with her nephews. […]

Mentor is a character from Homer’s Odyssey. In the epic poem, he was a wise and faithful friend of Ulysses, king of Ithaca. Upon leaving for the Trojan War, Ulysses leaves his son, Telemachus, under Mentor’s care. Later, not knowing the whereabouts of his father, Telemachus decides to go out looking for him. iMM Corner
The new iMM space on the FMUL Newsletter

March 2019 marks the start of the iMM Corner, the new column of the FMUL Newsletter that intends to bring to the reader news on research, projects and initiatives developed by iMM scientists. We thus seek to further strengthen the links between partner institutions and to disseminate within our community some recently published scientific articles. In this first edition, we delved into two science stories: the first on the laboratory led by Nuno Morais who through computational analysis of gene expression identified a “fingerprint” of cancer cells in thousands of tumours, revealing its therapeutic potential in the fight against cancer; […]

I NeuroSeS Meeting

Fifty people and a great variety of enthusiastic neurobiologists, immunologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropathologists, computer biologists, computer engineers and neurophysiologists attended the first NeuroSeS (in Translation Neurosciences) meeting. The discussion focused on “New preclinical models for Alzheimer’s disease”. We highlight the following points: There are multiple animal models for Alzheimer’s disease, from simpler organisms like C. elegans or Drosophila to zebrafish, lamprey, pig or ram, rodents and non-human primates. The most commonly used models – of rodents – have been playing a key role in the description of the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease, however, they have intrinsic limitations, namely the […]

When cell “fingerprints” can become a weapon in fighting cancer

The research team led by Nuno Barbosa Morais of iMM computationally analysed the expression of marker genes associated with a “fingerprint” of cancer cells in thousands of tumours revealing its therapeutic potential in the fight against cancer. The study published in this month’s open access scientific journal PLoS Computational Biology * shows the types of tumours in which these genes are most active and identifies drugs with the potential to selectively eliminate cells under that label. The centrosome is an organelle present in all animal cells, fundamental in several cellular processes, such as division, migration and communication between cells. It […]

New study develops proof of concept for targeted therapy against acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukaemia

Two IMM research groups led by Gonçalo Bernardes and João Taborda Barata, together with international partners, collaborated in the development of immunotherapy against acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL). T-ALL is an aggressive blood cancer resulting from abnormal cell growth that primarily affects children. Although chemotherapy is effective in more than 80% of paediatric cases (in adults the success rate is halved), patients who recur or do not respond to treatment have a very limited prognosis, whereas those who respond well to therapy usually suffer from long-term side effects such as propensity for obesity, heart problems and growth retardation. This is […]

Interview with Gabriela Fonseca, blogger and promoter of project “Cancer, the Story that unites us”.

Speaking with Gabriela was more than a simple interview. It was being present, being moved and learning a lesson in each sentence, from someone with remarkable experiences and who, with immense generosity, wants to pass that message on to others. The informality of this interview might seem strange to you; with Gabriela everything is simple, informal and relaxed. And there are no taboos or prejudices. During this interview, we spoke a little bit about who Gabriela is, what led her to create this and other projects and also about this exhibit, which presents 12 women 12 who have cancer and […]

From the Past to the Present
International Women’s Day – March 8th

Over centuries, women have always sought to, more or less discreetly, stand up against the subhuman conditions in which they lived, the low salary they earned in comparison with men and the discrimination they suffered from society, as British writer Mary Wollstonecraft states in her work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, published in 1792. These movements became more prominent as a result of a demonstration in New York in 1857, where factory workers demonstrated their displeasure against excessive work hours, combined with poor factory conditions and low wages, demanding more rights and better conditions in their workplaces, as […]

Keep in Mind
Bookcrossing by Faculdade de Ajudar [Social Responsability Project]

Soon, specific book exchange places will be available at the entrances of the FMUL central building and the Egas Moniz building. The rules are simple: Leave as many books as you take; Leave books in reasonable conditions and return them in the same condition; Do not write on books and do not fold pages; In order to start with a considerable number of books at our Bookcrossing booths, we suggest donating some books that are in good condition and may be “excessive” on our shelves. For this purpose, books for donation can be delivered to the CDI Library (6th floor). […]

For those who run or those who walk?

It is customary to go up the stairs at Hospital de Santa Maria (HSM) in Lisbon, and always see messages related to the calories we’re spending and how much we need to run to eliminate what we ingest. The idea emerged two years ago, and will, for the third time, be applied to more than 450 steps that fill the halls of HSM.. Can you imagine the work that goes into covering all those steps? And did you know that since last summer we have been planning the communication strategy for the upcoming Race, taking place April 28th? In its […]
