News # 87 | Feb. 2019

Editorial Note
Starting Over and Moving Forward

Sometimes we have to take a step back so we can start over and move forward. The February edition of the newsletter focuses on this process, on this often difficult path, and gives voice to those who, in the past year, felt that they had no other choice. The month started with the inauguration of a space that was reborn. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the Faculty’s Aula Magna introduced itself to the entire academic community, renovated and ready for a new life cycle. This renovation was the result of the effort of a work team that came […]

News Report / Profile
Between yesterday, today and tomorrow: An interview with Professor António Vaz Carneiro

We usually seen him walking at a fast pace along the corridors of the Faculty of Medicine. He’s a jack-of-all-trades and those who work with him say his agenda is chaotic. With his very own rhythm, Professor António Vaz Carneiro needs no introduction. The FMUL was the stage of many of his academic and professional achievements. “Owner” of evidence in Portugal, Professor António Vaz Carneiro devotes much of his time to the promotion of scientific studies aimed at raising the public’s awareness of the myths and not so dogmatic truths regarding public health. He was born in Vila Real, in […]

António Gentil Martins – a morning walk.

Forty-one years ago he separated two Siamese babies for the first time. However, it wasn’t the first time the country was waiting to know whether the Siamese twins he operated on would survive. Specialised in Plastic Surgery and Paediatric Surgery, as well as Paediatric Oncology, he combines surgical and oncological knowledge. He comes from a family of great doctors, it is in his genes. The grandson of Francisco Gentil, surgeon and founder of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO), his father António Augusto da Silva Martins, also a surgeon, died too young, when he was only 3 months old. Today […]

Why does Cancer slip from our grasp? – A three-way talk

The idea was born in one of the many conferences in which Maria Mota, Managing Director of the João Lobo Antunes Institute of Molecular Medicine (iMM – JLB) participated as speaker. Bringing together several people with knowledge on different areas of intervention, a theme is launched and each of them looks at it from their own perspective. “Adding creativity to the question, no matter how simple it may be and adding the reason of Science” may be the right equation that leads down the road to the answers, that was the challenge issued by Maria Mota. The iMM: Horizons talks: […]

Biobanco asked and we made a difference!

On February 7 we had the opportunity to donate blood and, with a simple gesture, help Science and, perhaps, save a life. The initiative came from the Biobanco-IMM team, which due to the scarcity of healthy samples from women between the ages of 40 and 60, launched the campaign “Hoje Pode Fazer a Diferença!” for blood collection. For 3 hours we were able to go to the Cid dos Santos Amphitheatre and give our contribution to Science: two vials of blood, the equivalent to 5 ml, and thus foster research. Ângela Afonso, responsible for the preparation, storage and quality control […]

Moments
The day the Aula Magna burned down – Isabel Aguiar’s account

It was November 8 and some Faculty members gathered for dinner, as they would later go together to Medicine Night, a show organized every year by the students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. Those who know her know that it is not usual for her to have her mobile on the table while she’s eating, but she was waiting for a phone call from a co-worker who was also going to join them for dinner. At 08:15 pm when the phone rang, she realized that it was not the call she was expecting. On the […]

Sara Gonçalves – The architect who designed Aula Magna’s new life

She walks around the room like a curious girl who is still discovering every corner of her own work. She doesn’t like to say that it’s her creation, always with a keen sense of team, and is particularly tempted to value others as if it were this that gave her the inspiration to create. It’s not false modesty, it’s a genuine altruism imbued with an artistic generosity, sensitive to others and to what surrounds her. As we go up and down the staircase of the Aula Magna, we meet a physician who is rehearsing for his thesis defence due to […]

João Godinho – telling stories through images

He was born and bred in Ribatejo, in Chamusca, and those who know him know that he is tolerant and discreet, a conciliator, who interrupts me to make it clear that he also gets upset sometimes. Labels aside, he doesn’t like bullfighting, but he does like to hunt sometimes; otherwise, he “totally overlooked” the most conservative side of his geographical roots. He has a son and a daughter and now that his bohemian days as a single man in Lisbon are behind him, he returns to his hometown with his family almost every weekend and appreciates peace and quiet. João […]

Antibiotics: A Red Alert to remember

The concern regarding the excessive use of antibiotics is still very much present. As a matter of fact, we could say it’s gotten worse. News@FMUL refers to a news piece broadcast by SIC in 2014 which was recalled a couple of weeks ago, with the participation of Professor José Melo Cristino. The topic is extremely sensitive and still on the agenda. Worth a visit here. Source: SIC Image credits: Nuno Santos (canal de Youtube)

Interview with Professor Fausto Pinto for the DN Life magazine

The 85th edition of News@FMUL had already reported that Professor Fausto Pinto was elected  President of the World Heart Federation, and that’s why we highlight the interview the Professor gave to the DN Life magazine. You can read the interview here. Source:  DN Life magazine

Memory Lane
Lurdes Alves – the soul of places

She was one of the people who, as soon as she saw the news of the fire, immediately called Isabel Aguiar, the Head of the Faculty Services, asking if what she was seeing on television was true. Her world-class auditorium was on fire and, with it, a past of 25 years of dedication that would only be retained in memory and photographic records from then on. Today, at almost 70 years of age and born close to Cartaxo, she came to live in Lisbon at 17, with her uncle who was Marcelo Caetano’s driver. She lived there for more than […]

From the Past to the Present
A dread disease…

James Lind (1716–1794), who was known as the “Hippocrates of Naval Medicine”, was a Scottish physician, famous for his work on the discovery of the cure for scurvy, who also contributed to the advancement of preventive medicine and public health. As for the cure for scurvy, it was indeed a remarkable achievement, given the fact that this disease, which we now know to be caused by the lack of vitamin C in the human body, killed more sailors than war at the time. For example, in the voyage around the world led by the British admiral George Anson, from a […]

The Renovated Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon

The inauguration of the Aula Magna of the FMUL began on the first day of February at around 10 am with the performance of the Choir of the University of Lisbon and the screening of a film about the inauguration of the Santa Maria Hospital and the Aula Magna – known as Aula Máxima or Great Amphitheatre back then – in 1953. Then there were speeches by Professor Fausto J. Pinto – Director of the FMUL; Dr. Carlos Neves Martins – Chairman of the Board of the CHULN; Professor Maria do Carmo Fonseca – President of the IMM; Andreia Daniel […]
