Editorial Note
Beginnings that mark the start or point to the end

Where do we begin? That’s what we ask ourselves in this editorial note intended to say that we chose beginnings as the topic for this month’s edition. January, the first month of the year, was also what encouraged us and made us look for some topics and ask specific questions. What is the exact moment when life begins, that is what we asked Professor Diogo Ayres de Campos, appointed last January 1st as Director of the Obstetrics Department of the Lisboa Norte Hospital Centre (CHLN). From a new era that is now beginning in Obstetrics, another one existed to explain […]

New Year, New Challenges – 2019 FMUL Activity Plan

We are starting a new year and ahead of us we have new goals and challenges portrayed in the FMUL Activity Plan for 2019, unanimously approved by the School Council, last November 29th. The strategy to achieve this goal requires our school to provide a quality education, combined with excellent research and a practice of medicine at the highest level of scientific and technological development, […]

News Report / Profile
Diogo Ayres de Campos – Two major beginnings

Despite working in the Hospital for two years, the room where he sits, between two tight desks, is temporary. On the table, which seems too small perhaps because it is crammed, there are two computers and important papers, one of which is a plan of what is intended to become the new Delivery Ward of the Santa Maria Hospital. It mathematically organizes each subject without apparent additional aids, knows its agenda down to the last detail and is always available to squeeze in one more subject. Two days after I first contacted him, he welcomed me to talk about his […]

Mamede de Carvalho – good humour at the service of life

When we hear him talk, we wouldn’t tell that he was born in Rio de Janeiro and only later moved to Brasília, where he lived until he was 13, living in Lisbon between ages 7 and 10, before returning to Portugal for good. So many years later there is no trace of the accent from Rio de Janeiro, however, a few typical expressions give him away. His father, a Chef in two of the best hotels in Brazil, was in charge of serving some of the best meals to important historic governmental figures of the world and Brazil: Henry Kissinger, […]
