Editorial Note
Simbioses

It was with great pleasure that I accepted the challenge issued by Joana Sousa to write the Editorial of the October issue of the Faculty’s Newsletter, an information channel that so contributes to substantiating our school. I feel particularly close to the contents of this edition, which illustrate the wealth of research that is being developed at our campus and, in particular, at iMM-João Lobo Antunes. As a Researcher, Deputy Director of the iMM, and Professor of FMUL, I get a first-hand experience of the symbiosis between these two pillars – teaching and research – of our University. This symbiosis […]

Living daily with cancer – the testimony of Sandra Lucas

I found her at the CHNL Centre of Clinical Investigation/ Santa Maria Hospital, Oncology Service Trial Group, a project integrated at the Medical Academic Centre of Lisbon (CAML). Sandra Lucas is 39 years old, she came to work in Santa Maria in 2013 as the Coordinator of Clinical Trials for breast cancer. Tall and cheerful, her presence is noticed making her strong and contagious. She went to Santa Maria precisely when she came across her illness. With a young daughter and having suddenly arrived at the end of her previous job at ASAE, she came to an interview to assess […]

Dark-haired Maria

1979 witnessed the beginning of an animated series, which would be broadcast in Portugal in 1987, in RTP’s program, Agora Escolha(Now you Choose) – its name was Red-haired Ana. Coming from an orphanage and adopted by two siblings already of some age, the 10-year-old Ana dreamed of the world, always awake. Speaking at a dazzling speed for the reasoning of an ordinary person, she had something magical that allowed us to identify ourselves with her and admire her. Ana allowed us to vibrate like little children because we could finally believe that sadness could be romantic. Many years later, I […]

Opening of the Master’s Degree in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation

Álvaro Laranjeira draw Professor Ana Abreu came up with the initial idea and, after presenting it to the Director of the Faculty and her fellow Cardiologist Fausto J. In a few months, this embryonic project became a consistent and pioneering study programme in Portugal. The hug between iMM and Laço – a conversation with consultant Lynne Archibald

Lynne Archibald is one of the persons responsible for the existence of the former Laço association, a non-profit association aimed at raising awareness of breast cancer, calling for and promoting its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The pink ribbon symbol emerged in the 1990s in the USA, created by Estée Lauder and Self magazine. Once it was spread throughout the world as a universal image, the Laço association created its name and brand image. She talked to us a few months ago to inform us that the Laço association, together with the iMM – João Lobo Antunes Institute of Molecular Medicine, […]

Carmo Fonseca and the Laboratory that wants to wait for cancer before it appears

What if we made cancer an ally so we could overcome it? Confusing at first, one quickly perceives what Professor and Scientist Carmo Fonseca was willing to discover. Creating breast cancer in the laboratory and watching its birth, so you can study the early signs of the disease. The challenge was launched by women from the EVITA Association who are at risk for breast cancer because they carry the genetic mutation of BRCA (mutations in genes that increase the chances of developing breast cancer). “This is a very active association and they called all Portuguese researchers and told us that they […]

Anti-measles medicines – a research led by Miguel Castanho

After so many decades under control and practically forgotten as a result of strict vaccination policies, measles has re-emerged and have already resulted in casualties. This is also the case of Portugal, where several cases of measles have been recorded. It should be highlighted that measles is one of the most infectious known viruses. The reason behind its resurgence lies with anti-vaccination ideologies, which have led to the resurgence of the virus among non-vaccinated populations that the virus can infect and from whom it can spread to other people. Babies under vaccination age are particularly at risk of exposure to […]

ERC 2018 Synergy Grants para Edgar Gomes (iMM)

O Conselho Europeu de Investigação (ERC) atribuiu, através dos ERC 2018 Synergy Grants, 250 milhões de euros a 27 grupos de investigação. Because he wanted to be a scientist, he knew he had to do his post-doctoral studies and that’s why he moved to Lisbon. He chose Carmo Fonseca’s Laboratory at the iMM. […]

Tendo isto como premissa, convidamo-lo a ler o artigo: “Positive medical education: Are we focusing on the right things while teaching?“, onde se descrevem os benefícios para a Educação Médica que advêm da […]
