This 80th edition of the Newsletter is focused on subjects related to the Faculty, some of which, due to their comprehensive nature, concern civil society as a whole. Report of the Board of the FMUL | 2015-2018

The Board of the FMUL was a challenge of high institutional responsibility that I embraced with a sense of duty and loyalty, with the support of Subdirectors, professors, researchers, non-teaching staff and students. For the 2015-2018 triennium, the Board, following the main guidelines set by ULisboa, has defined as main strategic areas the ones regarded as the four pillars that support a modern and innovative School of Excellence: Medical Teaching and Education; Scientific Innovation and Research; Institutional Communication and External Relations; Organizational Modernization. We have developed various activities in line with each of these strategic areas, and the most important […]

4th Congress of the European Academy of Neurology

Lisbon hosted the EAN Congress which took place between June 16 and 19, at the Lisbon Congress Centre, and brought together countless international figures from Neurology. FMUL professors José Ferro, Joaquim Ferreira, Mamede de Carvalho and Isabel Pavão, who coordinated different contents, were key participants. Scientific sessions, poster presentations, workshops and debates enriched a Congress focused on neurological diseases, but also on neurogenetics. Next month, News@fmul will develop some of these topics, with talks not to be missed.

News Report / Profile
Ana G. Almeida – A Cardiologist that brushes perfection

She joined the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon when she was just 16 years old. Despite ending the year as a 17-year-old, she was certainly one of the youngest students to enter until now. She argues that at such an early age you have few convictions about what you want to be, but since she was a 20-mark student in Physics and Maths at secondary school, she knew that it would not be difficult to choose the toughest of courses. Maybe it was the first time that Cardiologist Ana G. Almeida broke someone’s heart, the same as […]

Presentation João Lobo Antunes Fund

“The Institute of Molecular Medicine (iMM), founded in 2004, has been playing a unique role in Portuguese science. Based on the vision of João Lobo Antunes to cultivate the exchange of ideas between those who produce knowledge and those who practice medicine on the campus of the largest university hospital in the country, the iMM quickly became the benchmark institution for national biomedical research. The vulnerabilities of the current science funding system make it crucial to involve society as a whole in a commitment to the best research developed in the iMM, within the scope of clinical practice and medical teaching. Suzana Herculano-Houzel – The Advantage of the human brain

With a discreet profile and an easily understandable discourse, her Brazilian accent is still as strong as when she lived in her country. With a degree in Biology, her interest in Neuroscience would only grow much later. She completed her post-graduation in the USA and lived in Germany for four years, where she completed her Ph.D. Upon returning to Brazil, she worked in scientific communication and it was the work she developed at the University of Rio de Janeiro that led her to focus on researching brains, and what they are made of. After 15 years trying to understand how […]

AFIVASC – Impact of physical activity on vascular cognitive impairment

Will physical activity impact people who have vascular cognitive impairment problems? This was the question that triggered a randomised clinical trial that lasted almost 2 years and has been promoting the practice of physical activity among people with vascular cognitive impairment. Vascular cognitive impairment is characterised by the difficulty in making decisions, retardation, diminishing initiative and attention deficit. Since memory is usually spared at the beginning of the disease, this pathology is under-diagnosed. This is a research work led by Neurologist and Professor Ana Verdelho, who relies on the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team with physicians, physiologists and neurophysiologists who […]

Nº 115| JUN’18 Progress Testing: Exemplo Holandês a seguir?

Professor Martins e Silva – the history of a memoir

I find him studying documents that are more than a century old. Talking with him is hearing about part of the history of teaching and institutions. It is understanding that life is about cycles that repeat themselves like litanies intended to repeat an idea until it is dealt with and, therefore, it takes centuries for the litany to stop repeating itself. He explains that in order to understand the content of the many pages he reads every day, you must know how to do it transversally, a technique he has perfected with intense study and, I would say, that surely […]

For our safety
Women and occupational health and safety

Being aware of and taking into account the differences between men and women in the world of work, from the right to a job with rights, to the material conditions in the performance of the most diverse functions, or to issues that relate to parenting, is a way of combating discrimination. In the last decades, despite all the progress made in this area, especially in the access to parenting with rights, or in the improvement of the physical/material conditions for the performance of each employee’s functions, the fact is that gender discrimination continues to exist and is a breach of […]
